Blue

The Link gallery are having an exhibition beginning on April 1st running to April 4th called 'Blue' who are asking for submissions to have a blue dominant colour. I like how it's a very simple idea basing work on just one colour- which can also be in any medium too. So basically our possibilities are endless.
I decided to base mine on my time in Switzerland ski-ing because basically whenever I go I feel like I can almost touch the blueness of sky because I am so high up, which is also added to the fact that ski-ing makes me feel on top of the world. I know the project is called 'Blue' but I like how these images mean something to me, and not just something random.
I edited the originals on Photoshop and just played around with them this way. I like this way of working as I always discover something new on Photoshop that I haven't discovered before. .. And anyway, If I tell you how I edited them, my secrets will be revealed!
I think what did it for me with the final images was the way they look quite illustrated, and I think that's what adds that final quality to them.
Anyway, without further ado, here they are...

HDR

I tried my first HDR image today. I was a little bit wary of it, and thought it may not end up looking the way I wanted it, but I managed to make it look better than I imagined. I looked at a few tutorials on the internet and some of them confused me a little, so I found a simplified version, and just worked on it in my way for the finishing touches. There was an HDR image convertor on my version of photoshop which was very helpful, of which I had to add 3 of the same image but with 3 different exposures. One of the original image, then one with -2 exposure and the other with +2 exposure. I thought it wouldn't make much of a difference because of the tiny amount of difference in each image. The software combined the images and then you could edit it in as one of the options to how you wished. When I first changed it, I couldn't see much of a difference so onto it I changed the effect different than the tutorial suggested, and it worked a lot better for me.
I decided to use glorified landscapes so I could make it look even better to how I imagined. The first one was a long exposure shot I took of the Drakensburg Mountains in South Africa, and thought it may not come out well due to it being a night time shot. The second was of the Alps of my time ski-ing in Switzerland, which was a lot brighter than normal photos. However both of them came out to how I thought, and so for my first attempt, I don't think I've done that badly. :)
So, here they both are with the originals:

17/03

Jermyn invited 3 of us down to his studio last Thursday to help out with a guy whom he knew from a band called 'The Doomed Bird of Providence.' Some amazing designer had designed these prints for their album fold out leaflet with a list of their songs on and lyrics; and on the front was a beautiful design which I guess would be their album cover. Jermyn screen printed these out all onto this type of newspaper with raised lettering to give it a kind of aged effect. We then went on to guillotine it down to the correct measured size and then fold it so it would fit nicely into the CD sleeve. We worked as quite a team- one person guillotined one side, the second guillotined the top part whereas the 3rd person folded it to shape. And then we swapped. Pretty simple really. Except it took us 3 hours to do, but there was shit loads that Jermyn printed off, and there was actually a point where I thought we'd have to come back tomorrow!
In the eve we went to 'No Offence Intended which was an exhibition put on by a few of my year of Interactive Arters at Blankspace, and I must say I was thoroughly impressed by the range of different ideas and how professional it looked. It was all based on religion but everyone's ideas were so different as not all of them typically stayed within the confined idea of religion. For example Kay produced a video which was her daily morning routine which for most of us is very repetitive, Ryan created a flourish of wind with desk fans blowing little blue polystyrene balls around a glass box which he says was to do with his time in India when kids threw powder paint at each other around at the time of the festival Holi. These are just 2 examples out of the 8 artists that were on show, just to show how different they vary from each other. And I think that's what impressed me the most; the variation in ideas. I've never been an installation artist and in some ways this is making me really want to try it out, and do something different. I want to create some pretty outlandish work and thought provoke my audience with new ideas. But the question is, with what? Only time will tell I guess... First though, I need to concentrate on my essay...dear oh dear. . .

Eye Sea The World

I've tried this edit before a while ago, but it didn't work out as well as this one, so I'm glad I decided to try it again. I've done this edit particulary because I do try to keep my eyes open to moments occurring round the world, shocking or beautiful; the world interests me greatly, and I think this one image represents that.
I sometimes have moments when I hate the human race for destroying our planet, and feel devasted by news of the tsunami in Japan and the war ongoing in Libya for example. I know I can't do anything about it, but it makes me feel so guilty just watching the news knowing I can't do anything to help. But by God I want to help. Want to make this a better place to live in. Step by step I believe we can make change for better.
But then I have moments when I realise how beautiful this planet really is, and don't understand how people can't see it. I don't think I could keep living the way I do, when there is so much to see; so many beautiful eye popping moments occurring every day places around the world. As soon as I finish university I plan on working full time for a year then going on a mega expedition round the world with my boyfriend Tim. There's so much I crave to experience, so many life changing moments out there waiting to be experienced.
I have always been interested in animal safari programmes and programmes about our planet, and always imagined myself as a National Geographic photographer. That would be the dream job right? Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I don't have enough patience. I even looked at job opportunities online for both the National Geographic and Lonely Planet, but none were available. Who knows where I'm gonna be in 10 years. I know where I'd like to be though. Somewhere abroad helping orphaned animals or orphaned kids. I want to do my little bit. I think that's the best thing I could actually do right now.
This human planet is a beautiful planet but also a devastating one, and I believe we need to embrace it in the best way we can.

Verner Panton

Visiona II

Born in Denmark and finally settling in Switzerland, Verner Panton had a style of the 1960s and introduced this pop aesthetic into furniture and interior design. I found him on the Cool Hunter website and loved his furniture designs, especially the ones I've pasted here. I especially love them as it seems like a colourful comfortable area to just hide and get lost in. It looks a bit like a jigsaw or a maze and has a bit of a space age feel.
I love the aesthetics to it. The colours and shapes really are something else.

Verner was born on February 13th, 1926 and died September 5th, 1998.

Robots

I made a T-shirt for my boyfriend Tim for his birthday, and decided to do an illustration of robots destroying a city. I first drew the image then edited the colours in on photoshop. I am quite pleased with the results as I've not tried something like this before.
