Micron's 5th Birthday- November

In usual fashion, I was at Micron this month, and to celebrate their 5th birthday, they had the lovely Russ Yallop to DJ. It was quite a busy event even more so than normal, with Micron's fiendish followers squeezed into the tiny downstairs section of Joshua Brooks. This made my job even harder, as asking people for photos with a small amount of space to do it in deemed difficult, but I still managed it. Still, the mayhem ensued as normal, the DJs got crowd happy and really made sure everyone had a good time. There are only 2 more parties for December, and then that is it! So, make sure you make an effort to make the most of it! Anyway, without further ado, here is a selection of my photos from this month.....  Personally I think this is my best set yet....        !

Enrique Gomez De Molina

Squirdle, 2010

I came across this artist via looking round on the internet, and his ideas are so similar with mine, with the use of hybrids. He uses parts of animals and combines them to create new creatures, which could result in startlingly beautiful effects or something insanely creepy. His work is actually illegal, as it was found out that he imported dead animals from around the world; some of them are very rare, and so he could face prison. However, the ideas behind his work fascinate me. He himself says, "The joy comes from seeing and experiencing the fantasy of the work but that is coupled with the sadness of the fact that we are destroying all of these beautiful things."

Micron October

Russ Yallop played at Micron for their version of how to party hard in October. I especially enjoyed Russ's music this month as it was quite a good mix of slammin disco tunes. Here are my photos for this month:

Our Blankspace exhibition with Creative Transit!

Back when we had applied to Blankspace we didn't think we would hear from them, but eventually they let us know they had an exhibition slot for us in August between the dates of the 11th and the 28th. This was an opportunity for us to use the space as a studio and create our art within it. This also gave the public an opportunity to view us working as artists. We called the exhibition 'Chinese Whispers,' in that our work was so diverse, but at the same time each piece links itself with another one, creating a chain of whispers.  I decided to continue with a previous project called 'Humanimals,' and I spurred myself to take the animal/human combination one step further and show the similarities of us and our pets. I decided to combine an image of my dog, Tess as me. I wanted to show that we are a lot closer to them than we realise. And obviously keeping the same humourous side to it but via a different medium; through painting. I really enjoyed rediscovering my love for painting again. I was really proud of the finishing result, as it showed to myself that I hadn't lost the art of painting. In the exhibition I decided to put it in the middle of my other photographs I had created at the end of year 2, so they would fit well together.

The actual 'opening night' was only right at the end, which gave everyone a chance to drink lots of booze and look at art. The night was pretty fun but nerve-racking too as it was in quite a well known art establishment in Manchester. I ended up running around just before collecting more wine as we got sponsors from Sandbar for beer, but none for wine, which can't happen at an art exhibition! I think we could have organised it better, and advertised it more to the public. From past exhibitions there, I have learnt to get the word out more about our exhibitions, to get more people involved, especially people we don't know more. Still, all in all it was successful, and I would like to put more exhibitions similiar to this very soon.
